Working with the

Other People

When addressing the Fair Folk, I feel that it is best to keep the Old Ways unencumbered by mainstream infusions. It is very disconcerting to find references to fairies that are created out of a mainstream religion association cobbled onto the Other People, especially since most of these reduce the energetic relationship with fairies into terms intended to inspire fear and trepidation and thus sever the connection. These negative associations, such as the Seelie Court, Unseelie Court, and Red Caps discussed earlier, are meant to intimidate and discourage people from making connections or communicating with the Other People or spirits. People who are psychic may be called possessed, people who see or talk to spirits may be told they have demonic attachments, and on it goes, with the outcome of instilling fear and bringing the individual back into social/cultural/religious conformity. Do not presume because you have a bad experience that something external is out to get you. Perhaps you are attracting negative energies because you walk in fearfulness, or this may have been something you agreed to between lives for karmic reasons or to raise your spiritual light through overcoming this obstacle.

Encountering the Other People

I feel it is better to not have preconceived ideas of what the Other People are like, for some may come across as grotesque looking (in the style of Rembrandt’s sketches of people called Grotesques) but are quite friendly and helpful. If you judge people by their appearances and follow a social construct of good-looking means nice and strange-looking means bad, you may need to reconsider any attempt at entering Otherworld. The artwork of Arthur Rackham, depicting different types of fairies with long fingers, narrow or broad faces, thin or plump bodies, pointed ears or noses, and broad smiles or closed mouths, doing ordinary things—looking engaged in their work, kindly disposed, bored with humans, annoyed, or joyful in unfettered revelry—may help you to better understand the unusual appearances that might be adopted by the Fair Folk. This could even be a test to see if you are biased or willing to engage with people who look different before letting you into their circle. When I saw the hairy grogan in my house, I sensed at once that he was a helpful and kindly Fair One, although he was not inclined to be seen and disappeared quickly. Like us, each one of the Other People has a distinct personality.

It is also more likely that when you first encounter one of the Other People, you might not recognize the nature of the person until later. Just as I stated earlier that you don’t need to learn foreign or archaic languages to talk to aspects of the deities or to the Other People, you should not expect them to dress in what was high fashion in the fifteenth century of the current era. The Other People are not fixed in a time period but change and adapt through the centuries, and given their ability to change appearance, you can be sure they change fashion styles.
